The Old Library, Mansfield’s arts centre on Leeming Street, has a new exhibition opening to the public on 3rd July. Cinematic Gestures is the title of our new summer exhibition by Daniel North. In recent years he has exhibited at the Wirksworth Arts Festival and Matlock Arts Festival and now brings his paintings to Mansfield for his first solo exhibition.
The starting point for Daniel North’s oil paintings are often still images from films. You may recognise characters from Hitchcock films or your favourite western or horror! As well as film frame captures, the paintings also draw on images from personal photographs, details from video or board games and imaginary scenes from books and childhood memories. Figures inhabit strange and uneasy spaces and by simplifying or blurring certain elements Daniel creates the impression of virtual or computer generated reality.
He says, “Sometimes I will seek out certain images to fit ideas, and other times, scenes will just hit me that are perfect to paint”.
